It’s not every day that you meet an individual, a couple and musical personalities that have lived the life of Robert Hunter and his wife Becky and fellow musician Slater Smith.
I have to disclose this upfront and early. Robert Hunter has the gift of prophecy, meaning that when he says something or in this case writes it down, it comes to fruition.
The back-story to help you gain a bit more understanding of what I mean is that Robert led a life as a small town boy from Pennsylvania, a descendant of generations of police officers. He followed this path with his own career as an officer. Side note, he was part of the task force that brought down the DC Sniper!
Like most creatives, he always had an urge to sing and write stories and so it began. His uncle, a
Along the way, his wife Becky at only 28 years old, was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer. This literally rocked their world. To keep the momentum up he promised her that in one year from her diagnosis, they would be climbing a mountain.
What was amazing is that Robert wrote a specific date on a post-it note promising her that they would climb a mountain one year from the date. Although they didn’t climb that specific mountain, they did climb a smaller mountain. With the support of their family, friends, doctors, members of the media and Robert’s 90-year-old dad, they climbed that mountain!
This is the reason for the tour. ~ Robert Hunter
Her battle was not an easy one and when they thought the end of the road was near, Robert asked her what her last wishes were and she gave him his manuscripts and said write this book, perform these songs.
The post it note held him accountable. On a day when his faith was low and outlook was dim he found the post it note on the bottom of his shoe when they were ready to hit the road for their tour. Talk about angels!!
At this point, they decided to take on a 50 state tour of the United States. California was the 44th stop to promote his book. Traveling up to 10k miles a month!
He wrote a fictional story, Revival, (before he met his wife) about a character that led to this spontaneous and somewhat turbulent life. The character in his first book loved booze and calamity followed him every where. He met this girl fell in love and married her.
Fast forward, he met his wife Becky and this fictional characters life started to play out in many parts of Robert’s life. His original writings included his character being diagnosed with cancer and surviving it. He said his follow up book would be sure to include a happy ending!
Find Robert Hunter’s book Relapse online and at many indie owned bookstores and his music Revival can be streamed online.
