Pharrell Williams speaks on Yellow Light and Despicable Me 3 Soundtrack

by selenash

Gru gets fired and finds his long-lost twin brother who helps him find himself again!  This already sounds relatable, especially if you’re an adult.  He failed big time by not taking down the latest bad guy to threaten humanity, costing him his job.  But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother—a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin’s despicable footsteps—one former super-villain will rediscover just how good it feels to be back.

When I think of Despicable Me movies, Pharrell Williams comes to mind.  I think we’re all still cooling down from Happy!  That was an amazing hit song for the soundtrack to Despicable Me 2.  Even more, it’s also an incredible opportunity for a musician to have so much creative control over an animated film’s soundtrack as large as the Despicable Me franchise and pull it off three times!  I got a chance to speak to Pharrell about Despicable Me 3′s all new hit “Yellow Light” to try and gain a little more understanding of it’s meaning.

The Yellow Light video  is what you would expect from Pharrell.  He didn’t direct the video, he just showed up as himself.  You feel light and you want to jump right in and sing along with him.  I watched it a few times before I researched the lyrics because I heard a message within the song.  I asked Pharrell if he could elaborate on that message.  He responded that “it does have a deeper meaning than just yellow light and that he wants other people to have the same experience of discovery as I did.”  Also, he didn’t want to go into it but assured me that my notion was correct.  I got nervous as he said that I hadn’t revealed what I think it means.  {I’m thinking…do I really want to dissect his song right there in front of him and everyone?!}  He went on to say “That’s what it means.  You would only know if you had asked the question.”

He also shared that one of the things that he really liked about working on this, is because it allows me to hide things in there and build songs that are not just songs, but they’re kind of like treasure chest and there’s a treasure chest in there if you go looking.  If not, it’s just a song.”  I found it!

My short interpretation of Yellow Light is that it full political and spiritual undertones.  Very appropriate for the times of today.

Below with Pharrell Williams after our interview.

Despicable Me has worked with Pharrell on all three movies.  He said he was attracted to the franchise because of the opportunity to work on something new and different and just to be a part of something much bigger than he could ever be.  The soundtrack is fantastic!  There are songs from the 80s like Michael Jackson’s Bad, Madonna’s Into the Grove, Nena’s 99 Luftballons and Pharrell has a host of new songs too.  Despicable Me 3 In Theaters June 30, make it a family date night.
